What is Momenta?

Momenta is a short course written by experts to help you lose weight – whether you want to break a cycle of “yo-yo” dieting or understand how to take control of your gradually expanding waistline and make a lasting shift to a healthier lifestyle.

Most weight loss programmes put you on a diet. At the end you heave a huge sigh of relief and, more often than not, quickly put the weight back on.

Momenta does not ask you to diet. Instead it take you on a journey to help you understand that how, when and why you eat is as important as what you eat. It puts you in charge of your weight.

Suitable for both men and women, Momenta offers a fun, supportive and engaging opportunity to learn the 12 most important things you need to know about losing weight and keeping it off for good.

We reveal the many myths that surround the world of weight management and support you in developing knowledge, skills and behaviours that are proven to help you lose weight in a sustainable way.

What’s in the course?

The science behind weight management is complicated – there are literally hundreds of things that can jeopardise your weight loss efforts. And, if you’ve tried to lose weight before, you’ll know that keeping it off isn’t that easy either.

To help you make sense of it all, we have distilled a wealth of information into 12 key behaviours around what, when, where and how we eat.

    Course overview
  • Momenta is a 12 week course, made up of weekly one hour sessions
  • Each week we explore and discuss a variety of topics, covering nutrition, psychology (mind) and activity – including the 12 key Momenta behaviours
  • All sessions are facilitated by a trained Momenta Coach
  • All courses are group-based and taught in a “classroom” environment
  • Over the course you will be able to put what you learn in the classroom into practice.
    Support
  • Before the 12 week course starts you will go to a “Getting started” session. Here, your coach will tell you more about what to expect on the course and give you your personal comprehensive Momenta Handbook and Lifestyle logbook
  • At each session your coach will facilitate the activities in your Momenta Handbook so you learn about and truly understand the world of weight management and how it impacts you in your day to day life
  • You will also receive a code to access the Members’ section of the Momenta website. Here, you will be able to record and monitor your progress throughout the course – and for up to a year after it has finished.
    On completion
  • After 12 weeks, if you’d like to continue learning more or have the opportunity to refresh your knowledge, you can also attend Momenta Monthly Sessions. These last for an hour
  • Many people find these helpful as they offer continued support – but they are completely optional. There are simply there so you don’t have to do this alone if you don’t want to.

What makes Momenta different?

Momenta looks at the world of weight management in a very particular way. It provides you with the knowledge and understanding to let you choose how to make a lasting shift towards a healthier lifestyle and supports you in developing the skills and techniques that you need to do so.

To succeed, it’s important to both understand and put into practise three key components:

Mind
Can’t resist a biscuit with your cup of tea? Drawn towards the smell of bacon sandwiches or can’t say no to cake in the office? Find yourself eating chocolate when you’re tired and stressed or struggling to leave that packet of crisps in the cupboard?

Losing weight is as much a battle of the mind as anything else. Your thoughts, motivations, feelings, relationships and everyday habits have a huge impact on your weight - and therefore your health.
Momenta gives you the tools and support you need to make changes, even if you’ve become a bit stuck in your ways.

Nutrition
Confused about whether it should be no carbs after 6pm, brown bread or no bread, red meat or no meat, breakfast or not? Should you count calories, eliminate certain foods completely,fast regularly,detox or live on beans, salad and soup?

Most diets are overly restrictive and focus on what you can’t have or can’t do and, frankly they’re not a whole lot of fun

Momenta examines the evidence, debunks the myths and focuses on what you can do. It is absolutely possible to live a normal life, enjoy time with your friends and family and, at the same time, manage your weight in a healthy and sustainable way.

Activity
Do you need to run a marathon or go to a boot camp? Should you be jogging miles, lifting weights or joining your local aerobics class? Or can you just go for a walk? Losing weight is a balance of energy in and energy out – and being active is important.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Who is Momenta for?
Anyone who’s 18 or over and has a BMI of 25 to 40 (check yours here). We welcome anyone who wants to take control of their weight and get healthy – including men, women, young people, older people, busy people, students and couples who want to make changes together.

Q. How much does it cost?
Costs vary depending on your location and course package. Some local leisure centres and health clubs subsidise Momenta as part of their membership. Contact your local provider to find out more.

Q. What should I wear?
Whatever you like – some people come straight from work, others dress casually. The course is classroom based so dress however you feel comfortable.

Q. What do I need to bring?
Nothing – just bring yourself to the Getting Started session and, ideally, an open mind. You’ll be given your Momenta Handbook, Lifestyle logbook and other tools that you’ll need to bring to other sessions.

Q. What will the rest of the group be like?
Momenta groups are often a mix of all different types of people who want to lose weight and keep it off. We find that many people learn from each other, motivate each other and share experiences along the way.

Q.What will the Momenta coach be like?
Coaches are chosen for their passion, motivation and empathy. They understand that making changes can be challenging but are fully qualified and trained to support you to make it happen.

Q. Do I have to do ‘homework’ in between sessions?
Some sessions include short ‘take-home activities’ but they shouldn’t take long. Your main task between sessions will be filling in your Lifestyle logbook and working towards your weekly goals.

Q. Do I need any special skills?
No – only basic reading and writing skills. Although you will be given access to the Members’ section of the website you are not required to use it.

Q. Will I be weighed?
Your Momenta coach will take your height, weight and sometimes waist measurement (all in private) in the first session and the last session. You’ll also have the option to be weighed every week – but only if you want to be.

Q. Will I get any support after the programme?
After the 12-week course ends, you’ll have all the tools, skills and knowledge that you need to keep working on your new healthier habits. This includes your own personalised members’ section of this website to help you track your progress for up to a year. Your coach will also hold Monthly Sessions which you can attend if you’d like to keep learning or think you’d benefit from a bit more support but this is completely up to you.

The story and experts behind Momenta

Momenta’s story
Over 10 years ago a team of experts working at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College London's Institute of Child Health came together to write a programme to help families negotiate their way through the day to day challenges getting in the way of living a healthy life. Drawing together their expertise with those of others across the fields of psychology, dietetics and physiology, they developed a weight management programme for children and their families called MEND.

These programmes achieved excellent results. The team soon became interested in developing a programme using a similar approach and philosophy, but aimed specifically at helping adults.

Momenta is the result. It is now available in the heart of communities across the UK. We offer adults from all walks of life who are striving to lose weight and keep it off an effective, supportive and non-judgemental way to do so.

Dr Paul Chadwick
Paul is a leading clinical and health psychologist and specialist in obesity at University College London. He was the author of the very first adult weight management programme to be adopted at scale by NHS services over 10 years ago. He provides regular training to healthcare professionals in the fields of obesity and behaviour change.

In developing Momenta Paul has harnessed the very latest thinking about how we change and adopt new behaviours in all walks of life. He has led a team of dieticians, nutritionists, psychologists and exercise specialists to apply these to adult weight management. Finally, he has worked alongside operational specialists to ensure the programme can be delivered at scale to help as many people as possible – and do so at an affordable price.
