More and more of us are becoming overweight all over the world - with massive consequences for our long-term health. Our lifestyle choices, influenced by broader social, economic, environmental and political changes, make it difficult for people to live their healthiest possible lives.
So, should we be worried? Unfortunately, yes. Being overweight can have a serious impact on our health. Excess body weight increases our risk of Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, liver disease and multiple cancers. Plus, it goes hand in hand with other risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels. It also has wider everyday impacts on our bodies – from joint pain to problems sleeping.
The good news? Becoming a healthy weight doesn't have to mean giving up certain foods, being hungry or having to do endless amounts of exercise. It requires learning a particular set of skills and behaviours and incorporating them into everyday life over time.
Our multi-component Weight Management programme supports people above a healthy weight to lose weight in a safe and sustainable way, providing them with the confidence, knowledge, skills and support they need. It is delivered in the heart of communities by local authorities, leisure providers, employers and other organisations across the country.
It complies with relevant NICE Guidance, including those relating to behaviour change (NICE PH6, PH49) and obesity (NICE PH27, PH42, CG43 and PH53). Weight Management enables local, bespoke delivery of a world-class programme achieving clinically effective physical and psychological health outcomes at commercial weight management prices.
Weight Management comprises a 1½ hour ‘Getting Started’ session and 12 x 1 hour sessions over three months. It has been designed specifically to enable either ‘closed’ or ‘open’ delivery, to groups of up to 25 and can also be delivered in a 1:1 format.
Coaches attend three days of in-person training and receive extensive supporting resources, including comprehensive distance learning, a 200-page manual and a full ‘kitbag’ of resources. Participants receive a 266-page workbook, including a lifestyle logbook.
‘Getting Started’ can be used as an introduction to the main programme or as a standalone brief intervention in its own right and can enhance reach or marketing.
If you are a participant interested in calculating your Body Mass Index (BMI) we recommend you use the NHS Choices BMI calculator, which works for adults and children. You can find it here.
